In 1872, the "Berlin-Anhaltische Maschinenbau AG" (BAMAG) was founded in Dessau. Even at that time, the company was active in the field of drive technology, including the production of Otto gasoline engines, transmission and coupling gear sets.
From 1918, the factory started to focus on the production of gear sets, electric hoists and coupling gear sets. After World War II, when parts of the production units were totally destroyed, the factory was rebuilt in 1953. Under the name ABUS, the business restarted producing gear sets for use in industrial plants and the shipbuilding industry; they were also integrated into rolling mill and foundry equipment.
In 1964, a new production branch was launched:
the construction of large-scale planetary gear assemblies.

In 1994, the company received a new name and legal structure, i.e. ASUG Getriebewerk Dessau GmbH.

In January 2013, the company was renamed Getriebetechnik Dessau GmbH.
